Overview
When Jesus delivered the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24–25), the disciples asked Him three questions (Matt 24:3), which are expanded to four when we include Luke 21:7. Jesus answers all four questions—but not in the order asked. He also gives an extra, unasked answer clarifying what are not signs of the end.
The Disciples’ Questions
Matthew 24:3
“Tell us, (1) when will these things happen, and (2) what will be the sign of Your coming, and (3) of the end of the age?”
Luke 21:7
“Teacher, (1) when therefore will these things happen? And (1a) what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”
Resulting in Four Questions
- When will the temple be destroyed?
- What will be the sign of Your coming?
- What will be the sign of the end of the age?
- (1A) What signs will precede the temple’s destruction?

EXTRA — What Are NOT Signs of the End
Matthew 24:4–6 (NASB2020)
4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people.
6 And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.”

Q3 – What Are the Signs of the End of the Age?
Matthew 24:7–14 (NASB2020)
7 “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
8 But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.
9 Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.
10 And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.
11 And many false prophets will rise up and mislead many people.
12 And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will become cold.
13 But the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved.
14 This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15 for I will provide you eloquence and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to oppose or refute.
16 But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death,
